A Guide to Mixing Materials
Pairing wood, linen, wool and metal without making a room feel busy.

A room built from one material can feel flat. Mixing textures adds depth, but it works best with a clear sense of restraint.
Choose a lead material
Let one material, often wood, set the tone. Then introduce two or three supporting textures such as linen, wool or a touch of metal.
Repeat to create calm
Echo each material at least twice in a room. A linen cushion and linen curtains, or an oak table and an oak frame, help the space feel intentional rather than collected at random.
Mind the tones
Keep undertones related. Warm oak pairs well with oatmeal linen and soft wool, while cooler ash suits pale greys and natural white.
